谱谍是记述氏族、家族世系的书籍。秦汉以前已有。
维三代尚矣，年纪不可考，盖取之谱谍旧闻。
《史记·太史公自序》
魏晋时期世家大族强盛，为炫耀自己高贵的门第阀阅，重视谱谍的修撰。《晋书·挚虞传》：西晋武帝时，“虞以汉末丧乱，谱传多亡佚，虽其子孙不能言其先祖，撰《族姓昭穆》十卷。”挚虞企图用谱谍品定各家族门户等级，遭到政府的非议。
