我国滇西纵谷地形险峻，水流湍急，联络困难，交通多赖骡马驮运，故称为「骡马大道」。骡马大道有二，皆以昆明和缅甸间的连络为主：一、滇缅北道，由昆明西行，经保山、腾冲，沿大盈江到缅甸八莫上船。二、滇缅南道，由昆明西南行，经墨江、宁洱、思茅、车里入缅甸。
